Weak sustainability posits that future generations should inherit a stock of wealth, composed of both human-made and environmental assets, with equivalent value to the stock inherited by prior generations. ![]() (14) The strong sustainability approach asserts that future generations should inherit an equal stock of environmental assets. ![]() Since that time, approaches to sustainability have been categorized as either weak or strong. (12) The related concept of sustainable development was framed in a 1987 United Nations document called the Brundtland Report, (13) which mainstreamed the idea of “meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. (11) The forestry industry, and later ecologists, used the concept of sustainability to ensure that we do not exceed nature’s ability to regenerate itself by setting limits on resource extraction. The word sustainability derives from the French verb soutenir which means to hold up or support.
